High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Greta Public School, we believe every student has unique strengths and potential waiting to be discovered and nurtured. Many of our students demonstrate exceptional talents, and we are committed to supporting and extending these abilities through evidence-informed, purposeful learning experiences.

Our teachers carefully identify each student’s learning needs and apply explicit, research-based teaching strategies to extend and challenge their skills. We offer a range of opportunities including enrichment projects, extension groups, and—when appropriate—acceleration, to ensure that all learners are engaged and inspired.

Students are recognised as having high potential or giftedness across one or more of the four domains: cognitive, creative, physical, and social-emotional. This process involves teacher observation, assessment data, and valuable input from families. Information is shared across the school to provide consistent support and ensure each learner thrives.

At Greta Public School, we foster classrooms that are inclusive, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating. Students are encouraged to take risks in their learning, think creatively, and collaborate meaningfully with others. Flexible groupings, leadership opportunities, and goal-focused feedback help students reflect on their progress and continue to grow.

Our approach aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education Policy, which supports the development of talent across four key domains:

  • Creative Domain: Encouraging original thinking, innovation, and artistic expression.
  • Intellectual (Cognitive) Domain: Providing deep learning experiences that promote higher-order thinking and academic rigour.
  • Physical Domain: Supporting physical development, coordination, and performance through diverse sporting and wellbeing opportunities.
  • Social-Emotional Domain: Building confidence, resilience, and empathy to support wellbeing and positive relationships.

At Greta Public School, we are proud to celebrate the potential within every child. Through rich, inclusive learning environments and strong partnerships with families, we help our students turn their potential into achievement—both in the classroom and beyond

Across our school

At Greta Public School, we offer a diverse range of opportunities to nurture and extend our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students both within the classroom and across the wider community. Our programs are designed to recognise and develop talent across multiple domains, empowering students to challenge themselves, think deeply, and grow in confidence.

Students are encouraged to participate in activities that foster curiosity, leadership, and creativity. Our Public Speaking and Debating opportunities help build effective communication and critical-thinking skills, while enrichment projects allow students to engage in authentic learning experiences that stretch their abilities.

Creative talents are celebrated through participation in dance ensembles and school performance opportunities, promoting expression and collaboration. Students with a passion for music have access to our drumming program and our  school choir.

For those with sporting interests, Greta Public School proudly offers representative sport pathways and school teams that develop physical ability, teamwork, and perseverance. Leadership potential is cultivated through the Student Parliament  and various leadership roles, providing authentic avenues for student voice and responsibility.

Our students are also encouraged to take part in academic and creative competitions that extend learning beyond the classroom, allowing them to engage with like-minded peers and pursue personal excellence.

At Greta Public School, we are committed to providing a rich and balanced HPGE experience that values every learner’s strengths. Through a supportive, inclusive environment, we help our students transform their potential into achievement—both at school and in the broader community.
